So what is Altos de Chavon?
Well, Altos de Chavon is a village built in a Mediterranean style over the Chavon River, hence the name! It roughly translates to “Chavon Heights”, and you can find it an hour away from Bavaro Beach. It was built around the 70s, but despite being so recent it evokes the feeling of an ancient villa full of history! Every corner of Altos de Chavon is covered in this antique, mysterious flavor that will keep you enchanted every time you visit.
And what can I find at Altos de Chavon?
A lot of things, actually! At the very center, you’ll find the San Estanislao church, which will undoubtedly leave you in awe. Many couples celebrate their wedding there because it’s as beautiful inside as it is outside. Despite looking very rough and old, you’ll find a clean and modern interior that will accommodate all of your guests!
So is that all?
Not at all. Altos de Chavon can still offer you a history course, if you would be so inclined! It has an archeological museum, containing more than 3,000 pieces from different excavations around the island. You can find it behind the church, so it’s impossible to get lost! Feel free to take a history lesson about the island, revisiting the pre-Columbian culture and all of its customs. And as always, despite being a modern building, it has a wonderfully charming old exterior.
If history is not your thing, don’t worry! You’ll also find the amphitheater, a massive feat of architectonic prowess built in the classical Greek style. Given its size, I doubt it’ll take you too long to find it. It can host up to 5,000 people at once, and many popular artists perform there quite regularly. If you’re lucky you may catch one of your favorite musicians during your vacation!
