Macao Beach is one of the most beautiful beaches in the Dominican Republic! It’s one of the only public beaches left in Punta Cana, and it’s a popular spot for locals and tourists alike. Here is everything you need to know about this popular tourist destination.
Where is Macao Beach?
The beach is located at the end of the Higuey Highway in between Bavaro and Uvero Alto. It’s about 20-25 minutes driving from most of the resorts in those areas and 35 minutes from the Punta Cana International Airport.
Is Macao Beach Safe?
Yes, it is very safe! Of course, you’ll want to practice common sense. There’s really no need to bring your valuables to the beach, and avoid leaving your belongings unattended.
Restaurants
The beach is lined with little restaurants, but they all pretty much serve the same thing. You’ll find some of the best Dominican food here! You’ll have your choice of seafood (the fried fish is the best) served with rice, beans, and salad. Order an ice-cold Presidente beer to accompany your meal.
Bathrooms & Changing Areas
To be honest, there are not really any bathrooms or formal changing areas on the beach. If you want to change clothes, I’d recommend bringing a large towel to change under, or changing in the car. A new Dreams resort has recently opened, so if you’re a guest there, you would be able to use their facilities.
Surfing & Water Sports
Macao Beach is one of the only beaches in Punta Cana that has waves large enough for surfing. Whether you’re a beginner (and want to take surf lessons) or an expert, you’ll be able to catch some waves at Macao Beach. You can also rent a boogie board or paddleboard to ride the waves.
Photoshoots at Macao Beach
Macao Beach is one of my favorite spots for photoshoots! The water is absolutely gorgeous, and there are so many other areas to take photos with different backgrounds. Whether you’re celebrating your honeymoon or enjoying some family time, this is a great spot to capture the memories from your vacation.
